Recent advancements in machine design permit the use of smaller, more portable drilling systems. These smaller tools allow for lean manufacturing techniques to be incorporated into the build process, utilize less floor space, provide greater flexibility, and in many cases cost less than larger, fixed machine tools.
AIT has worked to develop and implement mobile numerically controlled drilling machines or NCDJ's. These machines are smaller and more flexible that there fixed tooling counterparts.
AIT recently provided The Boeing Company with a turnkey automated drilling system for the F/A -18 E/F Outer Wing Assembly. The system is used to automatically drill, countersink, and ream holes in multiple stacks composed of carbon fiber, aluminum and titanium in various combinations of material and thickness.
