ABX Air Inc. is the airline division and wholly-owned subsidiary of Airborne Freight Corporation (the parent company) of Seattle, Washington. ABX and Airborne Freight do business together as Airborne Express.
The airport (ABX) located at 145 Hunter Drive, Airborne Air Park, Wilmington, Ohio is the only privately-owned, operated and maintained Category II airport in the United States. The airport has two runways and parking gates for about 115 aircraft. Both runways have CAT II ILS and are monitored on radar at Dayton International Airport. ABX has the only privately issued Foreign Trade Zone (covers 575 acres) in the United States and US Customs agents are on site to clear all incoming Canadian shipments.
Advanced Logistics Services offers a unique combination of transportation, distribution and warehousing services, rapid response, provided 24 hours/day, 365 days/year; it is the only full-service business park in the world at a major air cargo hub, owned and operated by an air carrier; the main Stock Exchange building of 300,000 square feet is an activated Foreign Trade Zone.
ABX employs nearly 6,800 people and is the largest employer in a several county area in southwestern Ohio. The company has five major departments which oversee the airline's operations:
Administration Department
Includes Executive Offices, Accounting, Community Relations, Human Resources, Information Systems, Office Services and Purchasing.
Air Park Services Department
Responsible for maintenance of about 2,200 acres, 241 of which are paved; maintains over 3,900 pieces of ground support equipment; maintains navigational aids and lighting for the runways; pumps over 8 million gallons of aircraft fuel each month; provides security and fire protection; maintains clean environment of over 1.6 million square feet of building and office space; maintains 14 miles of conveyors.
Flight Department
Schedules, trains and supervises more than 715 flight crew members; has DC-9, DC-8 and 767 simulators; operates its own FAA certified Air Traffic Control Tower; more than 200 arrivals and departures each night of operations.
Maintenance & Engineering Department
Maintains fleet of 35 DC-8's and 66 DC-9's; about 1,500 of ABX's employees work in maintenance to provide 24 hour coverage; three hangers cover 210,000 square feet where mechanics overhaul and modify newly acquired aircraft and perform routine inspections and repairs; Base Shops cover 100,000 square feet and provides extensive component repair capabilities.
Ground Department
Around 2.8 million pounds of shipments are sorted in Wilmington each night; 981,904 packages per night in three sort buildings; about 4,000 of ABX's employees work in the Ground Department most between 1am and 5am; the 10 regional hubs sort approximately 1.5 million pounds each night.
